The drive unit replacement was not due to a failure of the drive unit. Rather, it was because there was a slight clunking sound when switching from regen to acceleration (and vice versa) at relatively low speeds (like when driving to/from a stop sign in a residential neighborhood). I'm not sure if the issue was the drive unit itself - it may have actually been some adjustments on the bolts that attach the unit to the frame, but I think they replaced the drive unit anyway... to be clear: at no time was the car not driveable, so I feel like it's important to note that...and also that Tesla's customer service has been extraordinary. :)
